Paul Convery – short biographical note

Paul Convery is an independent researcher and policy consultant specialising in labour market and welfare to work strategy and programmes. He was one of the founders of the Centre for Economic & Social Inclusion - an independent non-profit organisation dedicated to tackling disadvantage and promoting social justice.

During the 1990s he was Director of the Unemployment Unit and the Training and Employment Network. Between 2002 and 2006 he was an Associate Director of the economic development consultancy firm, SQW, where he led many of the company’s assignments providing research, strategy development and evaluation for the business support and employment services of many regional, sub-regional and local agencies. He has therefore spent most of the current decade providing analysis of the policy environment, demographics, economic and labour market for a variety of clients including many local authorities, the DWP, LSC and regional development agencies.

He has served in many public positions - as a member of the national New Deal Task Force Advisory Group, an expert advisor to its successor body, the National Employment Panel, and a member of its Performance Sub-Group. He has been a member of the LSC national Adult Learners Committee, the Council of London Central LSC and was a Specialist Advisor to the House of Commons Work & Pensions Select Committee (2002-03). Paul is an editorial board member of LEPU journal 'Local Economy'.

He is also an elected Councillor in the London Borough of Islington. Following the elections in May 2010 when Labour gained a 35-13 majority on the Council, Paul became the Executive member responsible for Regeneration, Planning and Leisure. Between 2006 and 2010, he chaired the Council's Performance scrutiny committe, the Health scrutiny committee and the West Area Planning Committee. Paul previously served two terms of office between 1990 and 1998 when he chaired the authority’s Economic Development Committee, Finance Committee and its Pension Fund Panel.

Paul is a social sciences graduate of Bristol University, has an MA from the Royal College of Art, London and was elected an RSA Fellow in 1996.

He has been a school and college Governor and a non-executive director of several training and economic development organisations including the main board of Greater London Enterprise (GLE) - which he chaired from 1992 to 1998.

Paul has been active in the community for many years. In his local area, he chairs the "Team Cally" neighbourhood initiative and the Caledonian Ward Safer Neighbourhood Panel. He remains a governor of Copenhagen Primary School where he served as chair for 3 years. He helped set-up his local residents association and between 2004 and 2007 he was chair of the Islington South & Finsbury Constituency Labour Party.
